“Val was composed in the summer of 2021, and it was dedicated to my girlfriend Valerie “Val” Okakpu. This piece is the first piece that I’ve ever written for someone directly. It depicts both her beautiful and delicate exterior, as well as her strong and confident personality. The swung eighth notes in the music can be loosely interpreted and are more on the “half-swung” side. The accompanying pans should be played delicately to leave room for the melody. The bass pans play countermelody lines that compliment the melody and should come out more in the overall balance.” – Jason Sivert.
