” This article relates the experiences and ambitions of Ray Holman to a pivotal period in the history of the steelband. The dates in the title mark important moments in Holman’s own career: his start with Invaders and his first Panorama own tune. The same dates frame a period during which Trinidad be- came an independent nation and the trajectory of the steelband art form was dramatically altered: Panorama became the premier performance venue for steelbands, leading to changes in repertoire and style as well as steelband organization and economics.
